Fake Microsoft Support Calls Spike in January
Scammers impersonating Microsoft support agents are calling victims claiming their computers are infected, then requesting remote access.
1Overview
Reports of unsolicited phone calls from individuals claiming to be Microsoft technical support agents have spiked significantly. Callers claim the victim's computer is sending error reports or is infected with a virus, and offer to fix the problem remotely.
2How the Scam Works
The caller instructs the victim to open Event Viewer on their Windows PC and points to normal system logs as proof of infection. They then ask the victim to install remote access software, which gives the scammer full control of the computer.
3Warning Signs
Microsoft never makes unsolicited calls about your computer. Callers use high-pressure tactics and urgency. They ask you to install software or visit a specific website. They request payment via gift cards or wire transfer.
4What to Do
Hang up immediately. Do not follow any instructions given by the caller. If you already gave them access, disconnect from the internet, run a full antivirus scan, and change all passwords from a different device.
5Prevention Tips
Remember: Microsoft, Apple, and Google will never call you unsolicited about your computer. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately and report it to the FTC.
